About Jarvis Harvest

Our story, mission, and commitment to sustainable farming

Our Mission

At Jarvis Harvest, our mission is to provide the freshest, highest-quality produce while maintaining environmentally sustainable farming practices. We believe that healthy food comes from a healthy environment, and we're committed to methods that nurture the land for generations to come.

Our Farming Practices

Sustainable Agriculture

We implement sustainable farming methods that protect and enhance the environment:

  • Waste Reduction: We source local waste to contribute to our production
  • Reduced Tillage: We minimize soil disturbance to preserve soil structure and reduce erosion.
  • Crop Rotation: We rotate crops to maintain soil health and reduce pest problems.
  • Water Conservation: Drip irrigation, rain collection, and water re-usage are just a few ways we reduce our impact on water resources
  • Integrated Pest Management: We use natural predators and targeted approaches to manage pests

Organic Focus

While not all our products are certified organic, we follow many organic principles:

  • Limited use of synthetic fertilizers and zero pesticides
  • Focus on building healthy soil through composting and natural amendments
  • Emphasis on biodiversity across our farm

Experimentation

Mushrooms are our primary product, and its a relatively niche market to be in. There's a fair amount of information available online regarding mushroom cultivation, but tried-and-true methods aren't necessarily established. We believe there's room to learn, grow, and experiment. Some of the things we're currently targetting are:

  • Log Grown: We're experimenting with various methods of growing different species of mushrooms on logs. Most of the wood we source are "junk" hardwoods that would often go to rot after a timber harvest.
  • Water Cycle: Mushroom-inoculated logs can be soaked to encourage production, but it doesn't have to be useless after that. We're working on developing a system that could potentially allow the same water to be used for three different production avenues from mushroom to garden. Stay tuned!
  • Bred for Locale: We're planning on developing specific varieties for our locale. We are located in a humid, relatively temperate climate. This provides a great environment for both plants and fungi, and we plan to optimize our varieties for yield and longevity through selective breeding strategies (Non-GMO).

Our Team

Jarvis Harvest is still family-owned and operated. Together, we bring decades of farming experience and a shared passion for sustainable agriculture, forestry, and experimentation.

Our Story

Jarvis Harvest officially began in 2025, but the real story starts much earlier. Our lineage dates back well over a century in our neck of the woods; some records indicate as far back as the late 1600's.

Edwin Jarvis (1928-2021)

Edwin Jarvis, our founder's grandfather, had quite a green thumb. Growing up in rural eastern Virginia, he had a connection to both the land and water. While his working years were largely spent in the service (Air Force) and as an accountant, he always had a knack for plants. After some time abroad as well as one county over, he and his wife returned to the old homeplace for retirement and passed portions of their property on to their children. Even in his waning years, Edwin still made it a point to get out and water his flowers.

Nelson Jarvis (1960-Present)

Nelson Jarvis, the son of Edwin Jarvis, also had a knack for the outdoors. While he and his wife maintained a healthy-sized garden while raising their children, his profession is forestry. Whether it be surveying, wildland fire suppression, or timber management, he's as experienced as they come. His ecological wealth of knowledge plays a huge role in our operations.

John Jarvis (1994-Present)

John Jarvis, the son of Nelson and grandson of Edwin, founded this farm in 2025. With a manufacturing background and a Bachelor's in Computer Science, John seeks to develop novel farming methods that can make agriculture self-sustainable for anyone while reducing impact on the environment. On the same lands his father and grandfather collected produce for their families, he intends to do the same with new techniques and new crops.
